Teaching & Learning

Strong academic foundations tailored for how boys learn best.

Explicit Teaching, Built for Understanding

At Coogee Prep, we use explicit, systematic and research-informed teaching approaches, supported by carefully selected programs across all key learning areas.

Teachers introduce and model new knowledge and skills clearly before guiding boys through purposeful practice and towards independent application. By breaking complex concepts into manageable steps and checking understanding along the way, we give boys the foundations they need to become confident and increasingly independent learners.

A Small School Where Every Boy Is Known

Our single-stream model, with one class per year level from Kindergarten to Year 6, allows teachers to know each boy well and respond closely to his individual strengths, needs and areas for growth.

High Expectations for Every Boy

Whether a boy requires additional support or is ready for greater challenge, we maintain high expectations and provide the guidance, challenge and support he needs to achieve his best.

A Rich and Varied Curriculum

Our classroom teachers work alongside specialist staff to deliver a complete primary education. Tailored specifically for boys, our program focuses on strong foundational skills, practical learning, and well-rounded capability across every subject area.

English

We foster a culture where boys appreciate the power of words to inform, persuade, and inspire. Driven by evidence-based methodologies, literacy instruction is targeted and sequential, designed to challenge and support every student. Key framework programs, including Little Learners Love Literacy in K–2, Spelling Mastery in Years 1–6, and Writer’s Toolbox, ensure research-backed skill development across phonics, spelling, vocabulary, and written expression. As a result, our students build exceptional academic confidence and consistently achieve literacy results well above national standards.

Mathematics

We build confident, analytical thinkers through structured, easy-to-follow maths instruction. Every lesson begins with daily warm-ups to lock in foundational skills, followed by direct teaching and hands-on learning tools so boys truly understand how numbers work. Using PR1ME Mathematics, students master core concepts before taking on open-ended problem-solving investigations. Through this clear and supportive framework, our boys develop deep mathematical ability and consistently perform well above national standards.

Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE)

We cultivate curious, active thinkers who seek to understand the world, its history, and the diverse cultures that shape it. Through structured History and Geography units, boys investigate how communities evolve, how people interact with their environments, and the key events that have defined our past. Students learn to examine historical sources, analyse geographical data, and engage in respectful debate. This intentional approach equips our boys with deep critical reasoning, cultural respect, and a strong sense of civic responsibility as informed global citizens.

Science & Technology

We channel boys’ natural drive to build, test, and figure out how things work. Students learn about our biological, chemical, geological, physical, and technological world through structured, hands-on classroom lessons. Core scientific knowledge is paired with practical coding and design projects, giving boys space to plan fair experiments, test their ideas, and fix problems when things don’t work the first time. This practical approach builds clear logical thinking, strong problem-solving habits, and real confidence with modern technology.

Personal Development, Health & Physical Education (PDHPE)

We equip boys with the knowledge and habits to build active bodies, healthy minds, and strong character. Classroom health lessons explore nutrition, personal safety, body systems, and positive relationships, while outdoor sessions develop fundamental movement skills and sportsmanship. Integrated throughout the curriculum, The Resilience Project delivers practical strategies for gratitude, empathy, and mindfulness. This dual approach helps boys build emotional resilience, self-management, and the social responsibility needed to thrive in all areas of life.

Creative Arts

We inspire boys to explore their imagination, build self-expression, and master practical artistic skills. Specialist music staff guide students through foundational rhythm, notation, and instrumental practice, while weekly Visual Arts lessons provide regular opportunities to experiment with diverse media and techniques. These skills culminate in major performance opportunities: all K–6 students take to the stage in our biennial whole-school performance, and boys in Years 3–6 represent the school at the biennial IPSHA Performing Arts Festival.

Auslan (Australian Sign Language)

As our chosen language program, Auslan gives boys a hands-on, visual way to communicate. Students focus on mastering finger-spelling, everyday vocabulary, and conversational signing using handshapes, facial expressions, and spatial movement. This practical learning builds strong visual concentration, memory, and clear non-spoken communication skills across all year levels.

Library & Digital Literacy

We foster curious, independent readers who know how to use technology wisely. Weekly library visits give boys dedicated time to borrow books, explore diverse topics, and build confidence in their own reading choices. Alongside book exploration, students develop clear research habits, learning how to locate reliable sources, evaluate digital content, and apply modern technology to support their learning across all subjects.
